Venice

I do enjoy visiting Venice and I always manage to return with lots of references to work on at home at a later date. The narrow canals always manage to reveal an intriguing composition and the gondolas do suggest movement that is needed.
I have tried to create a feeling of immediacy with this painting even though it has been created from a reference photo rather than plein air. I hope you like this one.

Venice can't be a real place, even though it is. Where else could the canals of our fluid subconscious mind run through streets of a city? I think your painting captures the close feeling of intimacy very well. There is no fuss in your style, it is very confident and accurate. I'd say you've mastered the medium. Great painting.

I love the angle of the canal edges, the lost lines everywhere, and the value plays - very cunning, IMO.

Beautiful, Trevor! You did capture the intimate atmosphere of the canals --that moist air and magical light bouncing off all surfaces. I can hear the water lapping....

Trevor, beautiful. This evokes my three visits to Venice since 1994. You've captured the light and moist quality of the air so well. And I love your gestural drawings of people. Wonderful!

Beautifully done Trevor and a lovely sense of movement with the gondola disappearing in the distance. I was trying to work out where you took the photo, but I did spend a lot of time walking around in circles and getting lost! The locals must have a map of the canals memorised! Have a great weekend!

Gorgeous. Love the water and I also love how you do these minimalist figures. How big is this?

Trevor Lingard said...

Hi Jala
Thank you for visiting again and your welcomed comments. Re size.. 350mm x 275mm (quarter imp). Mostly I paint half imp but occasionally this size.
Kind Regards

Jala Pfaff said...

Yikes! What does that mean in American lingo?

Trevor Lingard said...

Hello Jala
I assume you mean the size of paper I have used! I have cut from a full imperial sheet of watercolour paper which is(30" x 22")...quarter pieces, each one being 15" x 11".
That is the size of this painting.
The numbers I previously gave you were the approximate metric size of sheet.
I do hope I have explained that more clearly. Please do reply if you require further info.
