Music in St Marks Sqr

Its about time I put a watercolours on my blog. I`ve been neglecting them somewhat. Finding new material is my biggest stress each day and I end up searching for insperation to ease the addiction of painting. Inevitably I return to Venice scenes which I enjoy painting, but I wonder if my twee painting is not stretching my boundaries enough. Perhaps I should travel more and experience the world. To many things to do and not enough time in which to do it in.

I can definitely relate to the struggle to find new material and inspiration. It's the worst feeling in the world for me when I feel like I need to paint but can't come up with a subject or idea that I like.

Terrific watercolor Trevor. It captures the animation and excitement the jazz trio or quartet must have created. I like the way you’ve suggested the stage lights casting subtle edge lighting on the distant performer and also the tuning head detail of the standup bass. I can hear Charlie Parker right now.

hi Trevor,
I think this sort of scene definately works better for you in watercolours - you seem to create a sort of dreamlike state to your pictures which suits the subjects perfectly.

on the other hand your portraits seem to work better in oils, the 'look' painting definitely worked better as an oil painting than a watercolour.

I think its great that you can get good results with both mediums, I never had too much success with watercolours in the past (though I havn't tried in 25 years)

Nice piece Trevor; it grows on me the more I look at it. I appreciate the sense of looseness and freedom in your work. I happen to struggle with this issue as I paint. I'm confined and consumed with trying to get it right. How do you break free?

Thank you for dropping in on my blog and your comments which are appreciated.
Re your question.. well I suppose if I were to give a basic pointer, it would be..use has big a brush has you dare (relative to the size of your work) and limit your time to a piece. I see you paint quite small..they are very good indeed.

Nothing wrong with turning to Venice for inspiration...and we are lucky enough to see your results. Your watercolors are wonderful; you really seem to know the benefits of each medium that you use.

Hi Paula
Thank you for visiting my blog and your comments. I do feel a sense of guilt lately about Venice paintings. They have been done many times.
Kind Regards

Hi Trevor,
This one is beautiful. It has harmonious color, edges that appreciate color more than line and a simplicity of composition. Let me explain the simplicity....
While you have many pieces they flow as three shapes, therefore it draws you in to look more. Nice.
